I have been using Google trends for a while now. During time while I’m just surfing (usually procrastinating) I will take a look at Google trends to see if anything sticks out at me. Sometimes there are some very interesting search terms. If your not familiar with Google trends, this is where Google lets you see the popular search phrases, and is updated every couple of hours. You can also go back in history to look at what people were searching for last month, or even last year on a specific day. Looking at what people are actually typing onto Google can help keep you in tune with how average users are searching for things. This keeps you calibrated and in tune with the average user.

The longer you are into internet marketing, or just familiarity with the internet, your searches change because you get better at asking the correct questions, to get the answer your looking for. As time goes on, you’ll notice your searches change. But now your probably not like the other 95% of the internet users. The other if the other 95% is thinking differently than you, it will be hard to market to them, so we must see things from their prospective, and deliver results based upon what they are searching for.

While taking a look at Google trends today, I saw a toy in the list. It was at #40, but it was there, and caught my eye. Most of the results in Google trends are celebrity/news and late breaking stories, that people are trying to find answers about. But when you see a product on the list, its a good thing. Today the ucreate artimation was #40 on the list. This is a toy on the hot list this Christmas. This sparked my interest so I did a little more looking around to see if it may be something worth selling this Christmas.

When researching phrases that haven’t been around for very long Google’s keyword tool isn’t much help though. This is when we use a couple other tools to see if its worth promoting. Google Insights is a great tool for shorter term trends, and lower volume keywords. And if its a product, eBay pulse, and amazon’s top list are good to get some feedback from.

I made a little video of how I use the tools to analyze these trends when doing product or niche research that you can watch below.
